Knowledge is power! The best part about education is that it never truly stops. They say you learn something new every day and I’m a firm believer in this. It’s easy to get set in routines since we are programmed to pretty much live in a routinized way, but sometimes doing things that are different can actually help you achieve the same result in a more effective way. Take for instance your bus ride or drive in to work each morning. You are probably accustomed to leaving your house at around the same time and take the same bus, or route every day. What if one day you decided to leave 10 minutes earlier and try a different route; you may be surprised with the results (pleasant if you got to work faster due to less traffic and traffic lights, not so pleasant if you ended up getting in later than usual). In any case, learning something new is always great.
In the world of dentistry things are always changing so it is very important for practicing dentists to stay updated on new techniques and procedures so they can administer the best service to their patients. Current dental students are in a great position because they are at the forefront of education and change. They are able to use the resources that practicing dentists have, but are also privy to the newest information as well.
Part of the learning process for dental students includes hands on experience. Sometimes dental patients can be nervous when they find out a dental student will be performing an exam on their mouth (especially when negative news about dental students makes the rounds), but having faith in their skills is important. It’s normal for both the student and patient to get nervous, but having the confidence to know that they are skilled enough (and the fact that their instructor will be there to guide them) is a reassuring fact.
At one point we were all beginners at something; whether it’s the current job you’re in or learning how to drive, you had to start somewhere and then learn and grow from your experiences. The only way dental students can become qualified and respected dental practitioners is through proper education, training and practice.
